Dick Butkus is tackling the most important project of his life – to eradicate steroid use among the nation’s teenage athletes. The battle will be fought by the I Play Clean™ program, a national grassroots outreach project of the Butkus Foundation.
Butkus learned of the problem when hosting a television series on high school football. He learned that more than a half million high school students admit to using steroids. Then, he met Texas businessman Don Hooton whose son Taylor took his own life as a result of steroid use. Butkus has been on a mission ever since.
“We need to speak out and show youth that steroids are no short cut,” says Butkus. “They will ruin your health and your destroy chances to play at the next level. The better alternative is to eat right, train hard, and play with attitude.” That’s the recipe Butkus used to become one of the greatest ever to play football.
Butkus wants every athlete, coach, parent and fan to take the Play Clean pledge, making a personal commitment to embrace alternatives to steroids.
A few corporate partners are needed to fully mobilize the I Play Clean program, reaching the nation’s 17 million high school age students, and the coaches, teachers, parents and fans who influence them.
